What Koreans think about Filipinos

by Jade on November 20, 2009

I normally don’t read forwarded messages much but this caught my attention. This is an essay of a Korean about the Philippines.

MY SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES  by Jaeyoun Kim

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines . Do you really think the corruption is the problem of the Philippines ? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines.

Let me first talk about my country, Korea . It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed after the Korean War, and we had no natural resources.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines , for Filipinos were very rich in Asia . We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father & brother also died because of famine. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism…

Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the government to reform Korea . He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience.

In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park . They asked to him, “President, when can we be well off?” That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea , and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to Korea . So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea . He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart.

Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help developing country because they wanted their country to be well off. Though they received very small salary, they did their best for Korea . They always hoped that their children would live in well off country.

My parents always brought me to the places where poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we have to love our neighborhood. And, I have loved my neighborhood.

Have you cried for the Philippines ? I have cried for my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many poor people.. I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me sad in the prison were the prisoners who do not have any love for their country. They go to mass and work for Church. They pray everyday. However, they do not love the Philippines . I talked to two prisoners at the maximum-security compound, and both of them said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life in other countries and never come back to the Philippines.

Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood. The owners of factory and company were distributed their profit to their employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved money for the future and their children.

When I was in Korea , I had a very strong faith and wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines , I completely lost my faith. I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable situations in the Philippines. Street kids always make me sad, and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia , but there are too many poor people here. People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed.

My parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation. They told me that Korea was much poorer than the present Philippines when they were young. They are so sorry that there are so many beggars and street kids. When we went to Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a boat because it would fun.. However, they were not happy after taking a boat. They said that they would not take the boat again because they were sympathized the boatmen, for the boatmen were very poor and had a small frame.. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But, my parents did not enjoy it because of love for them.

My mother who has been working for Catholic Church since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without changing ourselves, we are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for them because all of us are same and have received a great love from God. I want Filipinos to love their neighborhood and country as much as they love God so that the Philippines will be well off.. I am sure that love is the keyword, which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once. It should start from person. Love must start in everybody, in a small scale and have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love.

Let’s put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world. Please love your neighborhood and country. Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the Philippines , there is God for people who are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love. If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines . Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country. You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others.

That’s all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

I sincerely hope that this essay inspire us all and show LOVE for our homeland.

I’ve read your article and it was really great, i hope that everyone would understand your article like i did because… the painful truth, that everyone wants to leave in this place… but i surely would like to make a difference it’s just people won’t cooperate very well when doing something good. People here always complain of the bad stuffs that are going on and not thinking of the good things that happen. Well, we need a leader like Park to change our nation… but people always say (Corruption) to anyone who stands in “Politics”.
Most of all there is this “Crab mentality” where when we see someone is on top we tend to pull him down through pride. Everybody wants to be the best… by bringing the best ones down.

“People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed.”

Most of us lack common sense and discipline and there are many people working on that, actually many people want to change the country and help it but… its the people that won’t LISTEN.
I have witness outreached programs and community services it seems that people who participate in those activities do not apply what they’ve learned.

“Faith should come with action. ”
I don’t understand really… why people go to church here and still do NOT change of their ways.
From what i’ve observed when i go to church there are young people outside the church just TALKIN!!
That made me curious ” do they even care of the good news? Do they even change just a little bit?” I think not.

We really need help “INSIDE”!!!.

i am a filipino. filipino hates their country because of CORRUPTION. who would ever love a country who’s corrupted?. i want to change the philippines. but i am only 13 yrs. old. i also cried for my country. filipinos are full of love. they can even die for love.. the philippine gov’t just dont help some poors for a reason. philippine gov’t dont want its people to be LAZY. and filipinos fear GOd. they love God, some just lost their faith because of poverty, asking God why. they lost faith, because, they can’t find answers on their questions, and they just cant understand why God is giving us such problems and pain. sometimes, i also ask God why? theres so many people who can have my problems, asking, why is it me? to be honest, i cursed God once. its in our nature not to inflict pain to others. sometimes im also thinking what if i adopt all those street children, and send them to school? but what can i do? im just a 13 year old girl. ryt? you guys, just dont get it. filipinos are full of love, they even sacrifice to leave their country to feed their families, and just to send their children to exclusive schools. its not that they dont want our country,, its because of LOVE. LOVE ! please dont judge us. why dont you try to live in the philippines with a poor situation. why dont you try it? im pretty sure,, you’ll ask God, why? you guys, just dont get, because you’re not feeling what we are feeling. since i arrived here in UAE, there is no night that i didnt cry, i want to go back to the philippines because they need me, they need my participation. they need me, we need each other. i did my best just to go back to the philippines, but my parents just dont want to. hope you guys understand. i love philippines sooooo much. i love you filipinos.

hi!
you have so wonderful essay made….
yah i am a Filipino. i really appreciate your essay… you are absolutely true..it starts with LOVE….
“CRAB MENTALITY”- usually hear in many Filipinos…they are selfish.
Foolishness and being greedy minded.
and you have also said that every Sunday they come to church and pray but nothing changed..well actually no at all… some of the culture of the Filipino,,, is just to come on Sunday to just attend the mass… its just common,, just come to church,, but they really don’t realize the essence of being come to church..

I have read the article above and was touched.Indeed, there are people who go to church but their ways are unimaginably twisted.I would agree that changes have to come from within and that it should be done as soon as possible.Furthermore,I want to stress out that corruption is one of the leading problems in our country. It is true that nowadays, there are many pinoys working abroad and send remittances here and by doing such they are helping our economy.Deep from within,i know that they dont want to be working abroad but living here is not an option for them either if they want to help themselves. I think there is no harm in working abroad unless you do your share and contribute to your country. As of now that is the better option for us.But the question is,what happened to those money sent to the government?of course we believe that our government can manage that well but as a filipino it makes me wonder why there is not MUCH improvements around.?
I am ,and it seems that most of you guys are patriotic too. I can die for this motherland. And i know that i owe this country much for it gives me an identity and sense of pride to some greater extent.

However, this great appreciation of ours stems to some exploitation.
My point is, many investors do come here due to cheap labor, namely KOreans,Japanese,Americans,Germans, etc.
If many of us dont love of country and leave here,do you think that there would be investors here?
HOnestly,SOmetimes,i feel i have been taken advantage. We have the capabilities and the brain but we dont have the means,as a result,we tend to look up on people who regard us LESS. It irritates me to think of this sometimes.
I am working in a korean comp. now and most of the time they impose korean practices on us.Of course,as a resilient person i try to understand but sometimes there are “episodes of indoctrination” that i can’t fathom why i have to do.

I strongly feel that the problem is our LACK of LOVE for our country but our INABILITY to use our precious MIND in contributing to improvement. Also,it is inevitable to point out that the ruling minds in our country have to change their attitudes toward development.Develop our country first not ONES POCKETS.They dont need to love this country but they CAN DO MUCH BETTER for this country. Logically, not everyone who says I LOVE U say it with great conviction. There are people whose great MISSION is ONLY to see great improvement but never to LOVE.I can say I CAN HELP U but it doesn’t mean I LOVE u,right?

Mr. Jaeyoun Kim’s essay is very touching. I do agree with him. However, I still believe that there are still some Filipinos who love their country. It’s just that the current system is eating them up. If they don’t dance with the music, the “strong force” would be against them. So, they are left no choice but to go with the flow. It is very sad indeed why the Philippines has come this way.

Filipinos didn’t want to improve themselves. Being a religious country is not an asset. With every good law to be passed to make out country better like reproductive health bill, the church whines and threatens whoever is in charge. As you can see. Filipinos are poor because they pray more than work. They want to rely everything to God while refusing to see what is already in front of them. They do not want improvement of their country, they only want freedom for themselves.

This touched my heart. I am proud to be a filipino, i have cried for my country. It’s not easy because philippines has few jobs. I’m sure every country has this problem. I agree somewhat about philippins being corrupt. Philippines, i hope they improve. It’s sad having to think about our country. Hopefully some people would stop looking down on us, i mean to a few people. Someone said that filipinos were ignorant, in what way? Why say Filipinos as in the whole race? I believe that not every filipino is ignorant. I’m filipino and im proud, no matter how many times confuse me for some other asian race. Proud of who i am, glad that you love your neighbor(: I’ve heard of this in church when our priest was doing his speeches.

We filipinos love philippinese, we love each other.
And maybe your right, we dont really love the other countries, because they are racist and looking down on us.
I have read many sites about what others thinks of us filipinos.
They hate us for what we are, they say we are monkeys, because of our dark skin. They love you more, than they love us.
My parents said what the bible says what I or we should do, “love your enemies”. But it’s hard to love your enemies, when they hate you.
But i understand you, we should love everyone, white or black, they are still our brothers and sisters.
Thank you!

I undersatnd where you coming from and I also think you are correct. But being 100% filipino and having many filipino friends it’s somewhat the opposite. I was born and raised in the U.S.A. and I happen to love my country and my friends who aren’t even full Filipino happen to love the Philippines even more than me. It seems Filipinos who aren’t born/raised in the Philippines have more pride for their country than those who do. Maybe they have no pride in their country because they are being called FLIPS (F**king Little Island People), or being judged because of the way they look. I don’t let things like that get to me because, hey haters make you famous! But the Filipinos I know love the Philippines so much!

I’m a filipino.
I was raised in the philippines. I could say that when you’re rich, you have more problems but when you’re poor, you sometimes feel happines especially when your with your love ones. In my experiences, i feel kinda happy that my friends and I seems having fun hanging out. We like being nice to one another because we don’t like fights. Many foreigners said that filipino are nice because they like being hospitability to one another.I love my country. When i was 10 yrs. old, we left the philippines but as we leave, i cried at the plane because i’m going to miss my loved ones. We filipinos are poor because of corruptions but we still believe that we’re good in heart and mostly prefer happiness than problems.

Well, a little about myself. I’m a 23 year old Korean-American and have pretty much lived in the LA area all my life. I really have nothing against Filipinos, they never trash talked or been rude. They have always been friendly and courteous. I know that some Koreans look down on Filipinos/Chinese/SE Asians a lot because they’re poor. I am not too familiar with Filipino culture (except the Filipino dad is gay joke! and Filipino moms are nurses) either.

I do think that Filipinos aren’t as motivated as East Asians (Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam?) in education which severely impacts their drive to success. Korean parents are REALLY BRUTAL on their kids in terms of education. They make us go to SAT School, go to Saturday Korean classes, make us take up sports, play some instrument. I don’t feel that in Filipino parents. They are just too chill.

The Philippines definitely has the potential to become a developed country. It definitely will take a lot of time though.

Did I mention Filipinos are so chill?

This article really inspired me and I hope this posts grows and becomes known because it is true. I also looked at the Philippines to be such a corrupt country and change will never happen, but reading this article, I wanted to reach out and show this to everyone!

I went to Miriam College high school for two years and transfered back here to the US, all my friends wanted to leave the country and the attitude is pretty much anything goes. Some strive to be very educated but in the end leave the country for better opportunities.

I’ve seen positive and negative comments about this essay, some attacking the author because in their perspective, saying he looks down on Filipinos and those who take this essay inspirational are traitors for agreeing with him. The Philippines is looked down on by people because it is a 3rd world country, why wouldn’t they? My friend once criticized me on why I love the Philippines so much, it isn’t a well of country and it isn’t known for a lot of good things. It starts with us, with ourselves.

People have their own opinions, whether it can be good or bad. It isn’t their fault because that’s what they only know. No one is omnipotent and has a history book by their side all the time. Jaeyoun Kim went out of his way to write this essay to voice out his opinion. The points that he has made are arguable, a lot of Filipinos do love their country BUT won’t take their time to actually fix it. When they leave the country, they would love to come back but not as a permanent stay. Parents send their kids to good schools in order for them to find a better job abroad.

This is my opinion, not everyone will agree and I understand that.

hello! well, i’m actually a filipino… i’m really touched of how you care for others so much.. actually the reason why there are a lot of OFW’s (overseas filipino workers) is because of the past government here in the philippines.. you state that our country was rich before right? i think that was during president magsaysay’s time. he was known to be the kindest and most humble president.. anyway, filipinos actually admire korea specially because of the kpop fever going on but the thing i would like to say is Thank You :)

Im a filipino and I totally understand everything that is said in the essay . yes, a lot of filipinos complain about the corruption going on the government, but they shouldn’t just complain right? they should act, and do what they can do not only for themselves, but also for the country. I’m only 14 years old, but I understand all of this. but we cannot be that progressive if we just complain. it just hurt my feelings whenever I see little kids in the street, begging for food. :( while im in a house, eating well, and living well! :( and sometimes when I see old people begging in the streets I’ll give them something to eat or drink. its just too much. this is all too much :(
– that is only the little things I can do for the poor. sometimes we donate in our church, some clothes, to give to the poor. I’m going to study and work hard, not only for myself, or for my family, but also to help others.

Well put. However, I never thought that this was the case for Philippines. All Filipinos I know except for one are very proud of the Philippines and love the Philippines very much. Please do not generalize. The one Filipino I know who does not like the Philippines does not like it as they are now rich whilst they were poor when they were in the Philippines (they’re in NZ now). I currently reside in Australia and I am a citizen of New Zealand and no matter what, I still miss and see beauty in Philippines. I grew up in Philippines and experienced poverty and now that I am in Australia and my family is well off, I still love the Philippines very much. It is true that us Filipinos complain so much about the coruption here but we only say this because it’s true and because we love the Philippines so much that we believe it is a pity that there is so much corruption in it. I love the Philippines. I’m proud to be pinoy. :)

I agree with some parts of your essay .well put. I think its sad that Philippines is in such a sad state . There is so much poverty and corruption in the country. However, even though there might be a lot of poor Filipinos in the Philippines , they are always humble, loving, caring and very supportive. Most Filipinos are very hard working , they accept any job even though it doesnt pay that much. But, it is not their fault they are poor. They are use and born into poverty and even if they want to go to school to attain a higher education they wont be able to because that is how the system is organized. The poor will always be poor and the rich will always get richer.Although there are some cases where some miracle stories happen, that is not the case for everyone. What I am saying is although we are poor, we still love our country. Yes, we sometimes hate our country but, we are all proud Filipinos. Filipinos are very humble people but, not all of them. Filipinos are very proud of their country too but, there are some people who are not. What I am trying to say is that you shouln’t judge us in one category. If you actually lived in the Philippines and see the beggars life story, will you be able to stand up and have the guts to smile like them and ask for money. Yes, our country is corrupted and Philippines is not as great as Korea but, you have to remember that us Filipinos are all different with different stories. Sometimes life gets so hard and people who have never been in ones struggle should not judge because each individuals story is different. How can we help ourselves when our country is corrupted. The rich want to stay powerful and the poor people don’t have enough education to realize this. That is why we have rebels in the Philippines who want to change the way things work but, ofcourse I dont agree with all of their political views as well. What I am saying is that Filipinos shouldn’t be looked down upon by other Asians .

This question is boggling in my mind from then on because I could even have second thoughts about this. But still behind all these accusations of some, I am still very proud to be a Filipino, and I will always be. Its not the state of living we are in but its our pride on the other aspects just like tradition and such.

Hello everyone!

I like all your comments and everything about Filipinos and the Philippines..Actually I am born Filipino and I will be forever with my entire life. I am also Christian. But sad thing to say, I lost my faith going to church for the sake that GOD answer whatever we asked for. Nothing is more perfect than achieving something we wanted by working it out. For Catholics who might read this comment no offend GUYS!!! I am catholic…my mom and sister always go to church every Sunday and every other days…but as what I said I don’t believe its God who work for us…It’s US who works for OURSELVES with the teachings incurred by catholic belief to guide us…I don’t like PRAYING but I call God and I believe on Him…

Also, about CORRUPTION in the Philippines? There’s nothing we can do about it…LOL! That’s a real FACT!!! and that’s a big “WHAT THE F***”…I always dream that hopefully one day when I wake up, I am in a Paradise Philippines… Many say that Filipinos are patriotic? Damn! Hell no! Only some… Many are still having the what we so called “manyana habit”…Filipino attitude that should be eradicated…and that’s what you can see as well about the Government…Always making promises….I don’t like promises because they are bound to be broken…I want action not just a PROMISE!!!

Actually, I envy you Korean people…you are diligent and more focus on things you want to work…though I can’t understand you sometimes, maybe because of cultural differences and language barrier but still you guys were GREAT!..Aside from having that white glowing skin, pretty face for women (which i like most), etc… I can’t enumerate all things good about you guys…coz honestly I’m still trying to figure it out…(with my Korean GirlFriend)…LOL! Right now and then, I’m using the internet to read Korean culture especially having a relationship coz I wanna make sure my girl get the experience she wanted from any guy…I am not rich…I don’t have much money for special gifts like Louis V or something… So the only best thing I could offer to her is “MYSELF”…and I learned based on what I read that having a relationship for Koreans must be a SECRET?…Oh my!..I might understand somehow but I am feeling the pressure..Starting to feel it because there’s no secret not revealed…

Jade you said “LOVE” is very important for Koreans…me too, that’s of high importance***…Love for self, parents, siblings, especial someone, and everything…I just hope everything will be fine…

And GUYS!!!! give me your advises…I need them Badly!!! =(

I’m filipino from cebu. i agree with your utmost insights against our f****** philippine economic situation. All of these were caused by greed. I can’t pin point who were the culprit why we are in the f****** situation, is it the filipino people or the filipino politicians or the filipino culture or only the bad greedy filipino individuals? Our government officials have no plan to our future beloved country, everything is a mess in the philippines! Filipinos need a true great leader who is very honest to help our country and filipino people must cooperate each other for the sake of economic success to benefit all the people in the philippines. In fact the first president named Emilio Aguinaldo is a damned first corrupt filipino politician! As a filipino, I don’t give him an honor to be a hero. He is a damned shit origin of philippine corruption that had been escalated till present! As an OFW working overseas, I want to share a sad comment from my non-filipino colleagues ,” they asked me why your country is so poor and dis-organized? philippines are rich in natural resources and most filipino are well educated; and besides this, philippines are an English speaking country and easy to learn the new technologies and do our own branded products, are filipino lazy or what? something wrong in your culture dude!..” I almost drop my bloody tears after i heard the sad comment in my country, and I don’t know who will be blamed the filipino people or political leaders??? Now I observed and realized that Korean people are very patriotic and they give a full concern in their country, so that’s why they flourished after a longstanding struggle of survival starting from 1900′s! I don’t know why we filipino having a hard time to understand to other culture and we want our norms will be the norms in the entire world which is impossible. What we believe that we are always right and should be followed by the rest of the world. In conclusion, we filipinos are greedy, tactless and conceited showing that we are proud to be a filipino but we do nothing at all, no sense nationalism, we always think as only an individual. Sorry, to say im a filipino but im not proud to be a filipino and i hate filipino culture!!! that’s it!!!

Hilary Cllinton said that Filipinos are smart and hardworking. I believe on that. You guys need to be proud of our country. Many Filipinos train many foreign people to study English. You know what I am a missionary and I also teach English for young Korean missionaries . They will later be sent all over the world to be an effective missionaries and leaders too. . Many Koreans are benefited because of Filipinos. No doubt about that. What do you think?

im a pure filipino. hey mel not all filipinos are smart! in general most filipino are lazy, they love to sleep always, they love to eating delicious foods always , does not want to spend effort for future advantages, love to standby(estambay), happy go lucky, greedy, extreme envy, great pretender.. so on… These are the filipinos who where in philippines but the filipinos outside philippines were different! Like what Hilary Clinton said smart and hard working! We filipinos are not yet matured in terms of politics to harness our bad polical traits or to improve our economic status. Filipino political matter is in a form of greed! They want philippines to be independent from america so that they can corrupt freely with their political great powers and to deceive filipino people! I rather to choose the philippines that will be conquered AGAIN by spanish or americans and kill brutally the greedy filipino politicians! just remember our business cycle and education system is in backward cycle without concerning our future advantages. sorry to all fellow filipinos this what i can say deeply from my heart! Pls open up your eyes brother filipinos.. JUST REMEMBER OUR COUNTRY IS VERY POOR NATION AND OVER POPULATED!

Im not sure if most of you agree that filipinos will nice if governed by foreign country such as USA or Spain?..

Our situation will escalate to our future generation forvever…
