The Status Symbol

by Jade on July 13, 2009

motorcycleOne of our farm staff, let’s call him Pedro did something stupid. We recently raised his salary because his been with us for more than a year and he’s out of the probation period. I just heard from our farm manager that he just bought a motorbike on installment. It means he would be paying more money than the motor is worth. He has to pay half of his salary to the company for 3 years… if he does miss his payments, he will lose it. He doesn’t really need it as we have 3 vehicles in the farm, they could always ride with it to go to the town if they need something.

The thing is that his brother in law, whom we will call Jose did just that in the past, he bought a motorcycle and then some days he would disappear to work on sideline (other jobs) so he can make his monthly payments. If he did not bought the motorcycle, he would have more than enough. The problem with these men is they wanna show off. Jose is not with us anymore as he later on became more and more stubborn and didn’t do his job.

I think for most, having a vehicle is like a status symbol.

I just hope that Pedro does not follow his b-i-l’s footstep. We hate letting go of people but we don’t like being taken advantage of too.

My point is, they should not buy anything if they cannot afford it yet. Better save for it then buy it.

I love to worry about everybody’s problem I might need to find the best wrinkle cream soon. I know I should stop doing that, carrying everybody’s crosses.

That is very common to Pinoys living in the rural areas. They could be easily lured in buying the motorcycle without thinking the outcome of it. The result? habalhabal so that they could earn more to pay the instalments.
