Why do most Filipinos choose to go and live abroad?

by Jade on October 15, 2009

I guess for most, the reason is to find a greener pasture. They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. So may Filipinos try their luck and board that plane to the US, Europe or some start first in the neighboring countries like Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan.

It is a fact that good paying job is very limited here in the Philippines, that even professionals like teacher, engineers, nurses and other skilled workers leave the country to look for better opportunities elsewhere. A teacher who earns only about ten thousand pesos (approximately $230) a month will sacrifice to work in other country as domestic helper or caregiver for a monthly salary of 1000 dollars to give her family a better life and good education that she feels they will not get if she stays and work here.

filipino nursesThe nurses who paid for a very expensive tuition fee for their college education were given below minimum wages, despite the risks they get from their job. Skilled workers feel that they were not compensated enough compared with the skills they have, that they grab every opportunity to work abroad as long as the pay is good.

Others who have been working in other countries for a long time chose to stay there permanently, they petition their families and blend in to that community. Most of the time they see to it that they don’t do anything wrong to prevent form getting criminal records as they don’t want to go back to the Philippines and live by the day again.

It is so sad that Filipinos choose to live elsewhere and become immigrants to that chosen country but I cannot blame them either for wanting a better life. I just hope that once they have a good life is that they come back to the Philippines and help the country grow.

Para mas malaki ang kita at madaling maka-ipon

I think that is the main and good reason why many professionals choose to work aboard instead of practicing their profession in our country.

Working in abroad has more and better opportunity to achieved your dreams espcly. material things such as House, cars, business etc.

Anybody got a chance to work abroad and got a high paid compensation, then why not? for me i will have to grab it immediately, coz there might not have any second chance again.

Besides, we have our own choice, to manage and handle ourselves… and nobody can dictate… kung saan ang maayos..dun ako.

Napadaan po muli..-salamat

that's funny you say the last few lines of this blog. my aunt who migrated here as a nurse, married an american business man and they now live in the philippines, have expanded their business from cebu to baguio city and have employed thousands of people in the last 2 years. and they're still expanding…
being of a US citizen, i was surprised when my brother proposed to us he is planning to go to the Philippines, expand his business there and live the rest of his life in PI. it makes me SO proud to say, no matter how high up we are from others (financially) we think more of those who are below us and how we can help them improve their lives, rather than how we can compete to get on or pass those who are even higher than us (that's the mentality most people with money hold.)
it makes us appreciate life more to have been and seen the most drastic places in the philippines. going beyond ourselves to help those who are struggling and suffering to see another day of their lives is the least bit we can do with our short time here on earth.
i totally get your drift on how sad it is to have to leave your homeland. my mom still dreams of retiring in the Philippines. their house is already set up and everything hehe. so there are people who plan to give back to what they left behind.
not everyone is as selfish as this cruel world may seem ;)

I agree alkapon na we do have our own choice. kahit ako I don't regret that I left the Philippines because I did grow and learn alot about life while living abroad.

Pero ang gusto ko ay bumalik na uli ng Pinas to set up a business there and help the country a bit by providing work sa mga kababayan natin.

Kung may matulungan kami 3 -7 pamilya tingin ko malaki rin ang impact nun.

Salamat sa pagdaan.

That's really nice to hear Kristine that your family are(your aunt), and (parents)do have plans to go back. I think it would help our country a lot.

Ako rin I will be going back soon with my husband to get our farm going and hopefully provide more jobs to the people there.

It's very nice to hear about your brother's plans too. I hope more Filipinos do have that mentality.

I think the government should do something so we all go back home and spend our money to support local goods.

I've been working in Cebu for years but I have thought of going abroad to try my luck.
